How to Measure Countertops for Installation or Replacement

Global Stone

By Global Stone – Expert Countertop Fabricators in Illinois

Planning to install new countertops or replace your existing ones? Getting accurate measurements is one of the most important steps before you get a quote or schedule installation. Whether you’re working with granite, quartz, marble, or another surface, knowing how to measure countertops properly helps you avoid material waste, control costs, and ensure a perfect fit.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to measure countertops — including cutouts, overhangs, and backsplashes — to get an accurate estimate.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Tape measure (at least 16 feet)
  • Pencil and paper (or drawing app)
  • Smartphone or camera (to document layout)
  • Calculator

Step 1: Sketch Your Countertop Layout

Begin by creating a simple top-down drawing of your kitchen or bathroom countertops. This doesn’t need to be professional — just a rough sketch is enough. Be sure to include:

  • Sink and cooktop locations
  • Any appliances or fixtures nearby
  • Cabinet layout (if visible)
  • Separate shapes for each counter section or island
  • Overhangs and backsplashes (if applicable)

Pro Tip: Take several clear photos of the space from different angles. These help fabricators understand your layout and spot potential issues.

Step 2: Break the Countertop into Rectangles

To simplify the process of how to measure countertops, divide your countertop layout into individual rectangular sections. Even curved or angled surfaces should be treated as rectangles when measuring to ensure accurate dimensions and material estimates. This approach helps contractors and fabricators better visualize the layout, plan cuts, and avoid costly mistakes. Be sure to include any overhangs, backsplashes, or cutouts for sinks and appliances in your measurements for the most precise results.

Label each section on your sketch. For L-shaped counters, break the shape into two rectangles.

Step 3: Measure Each Section

For each rectangle, measure:

  • Length (in inches): From end to end along the wall or edge.
  • Width/Depth (in inches): From wall to front edge. Standard depths are 25”–25.5”.
  • Overhangs: If you want an overhang, add 1–1.5 inches to the depth.
  • Cutouts: Measure the width and depth of sink and cooktop cutouts.
  • Backsplash: If you’re including a backsplash, measure its height and width.

Step 4: Calculate the Area

Use this formula to calculate each section:

Length × Width = Area (square inches)

Then convert to square feet:

Square inches ÷ 144 = Square feet

🧮 Example:

Section 1: 72” × 25” = 1,800 sq in → 1,800 ÷ 144 = 12.5 sq ft

Section 2: 60” × 25” = 1,500 sq in → 1,500 ÷ 144 = 10.42 sq ft

Total area: 12.5 + 10.42 = 22.92 sq ft

Step 5: Add Backsplash Area (Optional)

If your design includes a backsplash made from the same material, measure:

Length × Height = Area (sq in) → Divide by 144 to get sq ft.

Then add this to your countertop area for a full project estimate.

Step 6: Round Up and Double-Check

Round your final total up to account for fabrication adjustments and minor measuring errors. Double-check all numbers to avoid reorders or extra costs.

Final Step: Share with Your Fabricator

Bring your sketch, measurements, and photos to your local countertop fabricator — like Global Stone — to get a fast and accurate quote. If needed, our team will perform a professional digital template before fabrication.
